The Energy Connection Between the Five Internal Organs and the Cosmos
Share
A fundamental concept in Chinese traditional culture is that humans are not the center of the universe, nor is the universe purely governed by natural laws. Instead, humanity and nature are seen as intertwined—human beings and the universe form a unified whole. This relationship is often described as the connection between heaven and humanity. In Chinese thought, heaven and humans are not separate entities; they are mutually responsive, and nature—encompassing time and space—interacts with human beings.
Lao Tzu once observed that there is an energetic interaction between the five internal organs of the human body and celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars. The meridians and acupuncture points in the human body are thought to correspond to the stars in the sky.
Human bodily functions depend on the invisible energy fields of the cosmos. Each organ is associated with a specific energy and celestial body:
The Vermilion Bird (red) corresponds to the energy of the heart, linked to Mars and the southern constellations.
The Qinglong (blue) represents the liver, connected to Jupiter and the Eastern constellations.
The Xuanwu (black) represents the kidneys, aligned with Mercury and the northern constellations.
The Baihu (white) corresponds to the lungs, associated with Venus and the Western constellations.
The Huangfeng (yellow) represents the spleen and stomach, connected to Saturn.
The harmony between these five internal organs, Yang energy, and the spirit forms the Yuan Shen or Original Spirit. This Yuan Shen generates vitality and merges with the great energy of the universe, providing the ultimate safeguard for life.
As stated in the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), each of the five internal organs has its own "true qi" energy: Red for the south, Black for the north, Blue for the east, White for the west, Yellow for the center.
These energies correspond to the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—and are involved in the transmission of energy within the body.
The energy of the universe is constantly changing, and while there is no singular "best" energy, there is always an energy that is most aligned with each individual.
